Coming back to RoomCaddie
Get back to the home screen while a program runs: the Return key, the tray icon, opening RoomCaddie again, and tiles that come back on their own.
Updated in 1.7.1
What it does
When you start something from a tile, RoomCaddie moves out of the way. When you come back, the home screen returns to the front, and whatever you started keeps running behind it. A tile can also bring you back automatically when its main program closes.
Step by step
Come back with the keyboard
- Press Ctrl+Alt+S to bring RoomCaddie and its home screen to the front.
- To return to a program monitored by RoomCaddie, tap its name in the bar at the bottom of the home screen, or tap its tile.
Come back with the tray icon
- Open the Windows notification area on the taskbar and right-click the RoomCaddie icon.
- Choose "Return to RoomCaddie".
Come back by opening RoomCaddie again
- While RoomCaddie is running, open it again from the Start menu or its desktop shortcut.
- RoomCaddie brings the running copy to the front; it never opens a second copy.
Choose how a tile comes back
- Open the editor and tap the tile.
- Under While it's running, choose one of the three ways a tile ends.
Settings
| Setting | Where | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| While it's running | The editor, on a tile | "Come back to the home screen when" the main program closes; Stay until someone presses Home; or It's a quick panel — launch it and stay behind it. | Set when you create the tile: it comes back automatically if RoomCaddie recognises its main program; otherwise, it stays until you come back. Tiles for Windows tools, such as WINDOWS, start as quick panels. |
Good to know
- Coming back never closes anything. To close a program, use END on the home screen's bar.
- When a tile brings you back automatically, the home screen says "Welcome back".
- A tile only brings you back automatically when its program closes while that program is in front. If the program closes in the background, it just leaves the bar.
- "Come back to the home screen when" needs a main program that RoomCaddie can watch; the Golf and the main program chapter explains how to mark one. RoomCaddie cannot watch websites or Store apps.
- If you press Ctrl+Alt+S on the home screen, you see a ring and the note "You're already home — this hotkey brings you back here from an activity".
- If another program already uses Ctrl+Alt+S, RoomCaddie uses Ctrl+Alt+B instead and tells you when it starts.
- Ctrl+Alt+Q is the emergency exit: it closes RoomCaddie instead of bringing you back.
- If a Store app is already open, tapping its tile again brings it to the front.
If something goes wrong
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Ctrl+Alt+S does nothing while a game is loading | Some programs show their loading screen over everything for a few seconds. Press the shortcut again once the program is ready. |
| Ctrl+Alt+S does nothing while a game is running | Some games take full control of the keyboard in exclusive full-screen mode. Leave the game through its own menu, or use its settings to switch to a windowed or borderless mode. |
| "No keyboard Return shortcut could be set up" | Choose "Return to RoomCaddie" from the tray icon, or open RoomCaddie again from the Start menu. |
| "Your Return shortcut … wasn't available, so RoomCaddie set up" another key | Use the key named in the message. It brings you back the same way. |
| "RoomCaddie's tray icon couldn't be created." | The keyboard shortcut still works. Restart RoomCaddie to try creating the icon again. |
| "Couldn't bring … forward — Alt-Tab to it" | The program did not come to the front when you tapped it. Hold Alt and press Tab to switch to it. |
