Websites and streaming
Add streaming services and websites as tiles from the catalog or any https address; they open full screen in RoomCaddie's own Edge window.
Updated in 1.7.1
What it does
A website tile opens a site full screen in its own window, with no tabs or address bar. RoomCaddie opens the site in Microsoft Edge with its own browser profile, separate from the one you use every day. You can tap common streaming services and websites in the catalog or use any https address.
Before you start
- You need Microsoft Edge on the PC. It comes with Windows 11.
Step by step
Add website tiles from the catalog
- Open the editor and press + Add tile.
- Choose A website.
- Under Catalog — tap what you use, tap each service or site you want. Tap it again to clear your selection.
- Press the button below. It reads Create tile for one site, or "Create 2 tiles" and so on for more.
Each site gets its own tile, with the service name in capital letters. If you enter a name in Name, it applies only when you create one tile. All the tiles are saved as one change with one snapshot.
Add any other website
- In A website, type the address under Or any address. You can type just the site's name, such as netflix.com, and RoomCaddie adds the https part.
- Press Create tile, or press Enter.
When you type an address, the tile takes the site's name, such as NETFLIX for netflix.com, unless you enter a name in Name first. You can type an address and choose catalog services at the same time. All the tiles are created together.
Add a website to a tile that already launches something
- Tap the tile in the editor and press + Add another program.
- Choose A website, then tap a service, or type an address and press Add the website step.
- To return to the other sources, press Other sources.
Settings
| Setting | Where | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| The website | The tile's card in the editor, which reads "Website ·" followed by the address | The address the tile opens. To change it, add the new site with + Add another program and remove the old card with Remove step…. | The site you picked |
Good to know
- The catalog has these groups: Streaming, Golf, News, Sports, Music and Other.
- You can use only https addresses. An address on your own network works too, as long as it uses https.
- RoomCaddie uses its own browser profile, so even if you are signed in to a site in your everyday Edge, you need to sign in again the first time you open it from a tile.
- The browser profile stays on this PC and is not included in a backup. If you move to a new PC, you need to sign in to each site again.
- RoomCaddie opens a website but does not monitor it, so it does not return to the home screen automatically when you close the site. The Coming back to RoomCaddie chapter explains how to return.
- If a service has its own Microsoft Store app, Scan this PC lists it. A tile you create from that app opens the app instead of the website. If the app is already open, tapping the tile brings it to the front instead of opening it again.
- You can set a website card to open on a particular screen. The Screens chapter explains how.
If something goes wrong
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| The address box turns red and says "Needs to be a full https:// address" | Check the spelling. The address must be a real site name, such as netflix.com, and must use https. |
| "That doesn't look like a web address — something like netflix.com." | Check the address you entered for the website step and try again. |
| "Microsoft Edge wasn't found" | Install or repair Microsoft Edge, then tap the tile again. |
| "couldn't check whether Microsoft Edge is available, so it didn't start anything" | Wait a moment and tap the tile again. |
| "that app isn't installed anymore" | The Store app that the tile opens has been removed. Reinstall it, or add the service again as a website. |
