Backups and moving PCs
Backups and moving PCs: undo any change from the automatic snapshots, keep a moment by name, and carry your room to another PC in a backup file.
Updated in 1.7.1
What it does
You can undo any change because RoomCaddie takes a snapshot of your whole room before every change you make. It keeps the ten newest snapshots, plus any snapshots you name yourself, which stay until you delete them. You can use a backup file to move your room and its pictures to another PC.
Before you start
- To find backups, open the editor, press Settings… and scroll to Backups.
- Before you move to another PC, install RoomCaddie and the programs your tiles start on that PC.
Step by step
Undo a change
- In Settings > Backups, find the snapshot from before the change. The newest snapshots are at the top.
- Press Restore on that row.
- Read the box and press Restore.
The home screen now shows that setup. Before restoring, RoomCaddie takes a snapshot of your current room so you can undo the restore too. If RoomCaddie cannot read your current room, there is no snapshot to go back to, and it keeps the damaged file aside instead.
Save a moment you want to keep
- In Settings > Backups, press Snapshot now….
- Type a name you'll recognise later, like "Before the party setup".
- Press Save.
To keep an automatic snapshot beyond the ten newest, press Keep… on its row and give it a name.
Rename or delete a named snapshot
- To change a named snapshot's name, press Rename on its row, then Save.
- Or press Delete…, then Delete it. This deletes only that snapshot; your room and automatic snapshots stay.
Move your room to another PC
- On the old PC, go to Settings > Backups and press Back up to a file….
- Save the file. It saves to Documents unless you choose another folder, with a name like "roomcaddie-backup-" followed by the date and ending in ".sbbackup".
- Copy the file to the new PC.
- On the new PC, install RoomCaddie and enter your license key; it is not included in the file. Then finish the setup wizard.
- Go to Settings > Backups, press Restore from a file… and pick the file.
- RoomCaddie checks the file and shows the room's name, tiles and pictures. Press Restore.
Settings
| Setting | Where | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic snapshots | Settings > Backups | Takes a snapshot before every change and keeps the ten newest. | Always on |
| Named snapshots | Settings > Backups | Keeps snapshots until you delete them. | None |
Good to know
- A restore does not affect programs that are running.
- Before a restore changes anything, RoomCaddie saves a snapshot of your current room and reads it back. If RoomCaddie cannot read your current room, it keeps the damaged file aside instead. If it cannot do this, the restore stops and nothing changes.
- A backup includes your complete setup, including which programs on the PC each tile starts. Only restore files you made yourself or fully trust.
- The file includes your room and its pictures, but never your license key.
- Backups do not include your course stars, notes and tags: a restore keeps the ones you have, and a new PC starts without them.
- A backup file can hold up to 512 pictures, 150 MB in all. RoomCaddie rejects files larger than 256 MB.
- RoomCaddie reads the whole file before changing anything. If it rejects the file, your room stays exactly as it was.
- Restore from a file… also accepts older ".json" backups.
If something goes wrong
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| "Not restored —" and a reason, then "Nothing was changed." | RoomCaddie rejected the file, and your room is unchanged. Make a new backup on the old PC and try that one. |
| "that file is larger than a RoomCaddie backup can be (256 MB)" | The file is not a RoomCaddie backup, or it is damaged. Make a new backup. |
| "but the file doesn't carry it" | A picture your room uses is missing from the file. Make a new backup on the old PC. |
| "Restore not confirmed" | Check whether the drive is full, disconnected or read-only, then try the restore again. The snapshot from before the restore is the newest entry in Backups. If your room could not be read before the restore, there is no snapshot, and the box names the damaged file RoomCaddie kept instead. |
| "Backups could not be read" | Nothing has changed, and your snapshots may still exist. Restart RoomCaddie and open Backups again. |
| "Nothing was saved — a snapshot needs a name." | Type a name, then press Save. |
