Tiles and the editor

Open the editor, add tiles and folders, choose what each tile launches and in what order, arrange, move and delete them.

Updated in 1.7.1

What it does

Use the editor to change the room's name and look, choose its tiles, arrange them, and set what each tile starts. RoomCaddie saves each change as you make it and keeps a snapshot of the room from just before that change.

Step by step

Open and close the editor

  1. On the home screen, press the ✎ button in the bottom right corner. The editor opens on the screen you were viewing.
  2. When you finish, press Done editing or Esc to return to the home screen.

Change the room's name and look

  1. Tap an empty space away from the tiles to show the room's settings in the panel.
  2. Type a new name in Room name. The name is saved in capital letters when you press Enter or leave the field.
  3. Under Theme, tap a group, then a theme. The whole room changes at once.
  4. Under Tile names sit, choose where each tile's name appears.

Add a tile

  1. Press + Add tile after the last tile. A tile called NEW TILE appears, but nothing is saved yet.
  2. Type the tile's name in Name.
  3. Under What does it do?, choose Launches a program or Holds other tiles.
  4. Choose a source: Scan this PC, Browse for a program…, A website or A Windows panel.
  5. After a scan, tap as many programs as you want, then press Add 1 tile or Add 2 tiles: the button shows how many programs you tapped.

To cancel a new tile, press Cancel — remove this tile or Esc. A new folder is never left empty: you choose its first tile right away, and the folder and tile are saved together. When you add a Windows panel on the home screen, it goes into a UTILITIES folder.

Choose what a tile launches

  1. Tap the tile to show its Name, its Artwork and What it launches, in order in the panel.
  2. Each program appears as a card. One tap on the tile runs the cards from top to bottom.
  3. To launch something else as well, press + Add another program and choose a source. Helper programs go first, and the main item goes last.
  4. Press ▲ or ▼ on a card to move it earlier or later in the order.
  5. On a program's card, under If it's already open, choose Leave it — carry on or Start it again.
  6. Choose how long to wait before the next card or after the last one: until the program is running (programs only), Wait a set time of 1 to 120 seconds, or not at all.
  7. Press Change program… to choose a different program for a card, or Remove step… to remove the card.

Arrange tiles

  1. Press ◀ or ▶ on a tile to move it one place, or drag it by its ⁙ handle.
  2. To move a tile into a folder or out to the home screen, tap it and press Move to…. Choose where it goes; it appears last in that location.

Work inside a folder

  1. Tap a folder to see its tiles, then tap a tile to edit it.
  2. To go back up, press ‹ Back, or tap a name in the path above the tiles, such as HOME SCREEN.

Turn a tile into a folder

  1. Tap the tile and press Convert to folder and add tiles →.
  2. The tile moves inside a new folder with the same name. Press Keep the name, or type a new name and press Save.
  3. RoomCaddie opens the new folder and starts a new tile inside it.

Delete a tile

  1. Tap the tile and press Delete tile…, or Delete folder… for a folder.
  2. Press Delete tile to confirm. This removes only the tile and leaves the program itself unchanged.

For a folder, the button is Delete it and everything inside. When you delete the last tile inside a folder, RoomCaddie gives you one choice: delete the tile and folder together, or delete neither.

Good to know

  • Each change is saved separately with one snapshot, so Backups can restore the room to how it was before that change.
  • A tile's Tested line says "Untested" after any change to what it launches or how it ends.
  • Folders can go up to three levels deep.
  • You cannot delete the last tile on the home screen, so the room is never an empty wall. Add another tile first.
  • Shows league standings adds a tile for a league's standings, and Sends a smart-home signal appears once Settings has a smart-home connection.
  • On a program's card, you also choose which screen it opens on and which program is the main program. These settings are covered in the Screens and Golf and the main program chapters.
  • Room logo and each tile's Artwork are covered in Pictures and the room logo.
