Your license key
Your license key: enter it once, change it, free a PC's place, move it to another PC, and what the key screen's messages mean.
Updated in 1.7.1
What it does
Your license key lets you use RoomCaddie on this PC. RoomCaddie checks it with our store once, saves the key and the store's answer on this PC, and never asks again. One key covers up to three of your own PCs.
Before you start
- Have your purchase email ready. Your key is under "RoomCaddie key": 36 characters with dashes.
- You need an internet connection for the one-time check.
Step by step
Enter your key the first time
- Paste or type your key on the key screen, the first screen RoomCaddie shows after installation.
- Under This PC, keep the name or change it to something like "Garage sim" or "Laptop". This name identifies the PC in your key's record.
- Press Check key →.
- When the store accepts your key, press Next: set up the room →.
Change the key on this PC
- In the editor, press Settings…, then Change key… on the License row.
- Type your new key and change This PC if you want.
- Press Check key.
RoomCaddie checks the new key with the store first. Then it asks the store to free this PC's place on the old key so you can use that place on another PC. If the store does not confirm this, RoomCaddie tells you. Email [email protected] to free that place.
Free this PC's place on the key
- In Settings > License, press Deactivate this PC….
- Read the message and press Deactivate and close.
This frees a place on your key for another PC, and RoomCaddie closes to the key screen on this PC. Your room stays saved, and your key opens it again whenever a place is free.
Move your key to another PC
- On the old PC, free its place: Settings > License > Deactivate this PC….
- On the new PC, enter your key on the key screen.
If you no longer have the old PC, email [email protected] with the name it had.
Settings
| Setting | Where | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| License | Settings > License | Shows your key's last four characters, this PC's name and when the store last confirmed your key. | No key |
| This PC | The key screen, and Change key… | The name that identifies this PC in your key's record. | The Windows computer name |
Good to know
- Each time RoomCaddie checks for updates, it also confirms your key with the store in the background. If there is no internet connection that week, nothing changes; RoomCaddie tries again the next week.
- RoomCaddie locks only when the store confirms that your key was refunded or disabled, or that this PC's place was given back. Losing your internet connection or the store being down never locks anything.
- Settings shows only your key's last four characters.
- Backup files and support info never include your key.
- This PC is the only information about your PC that the store receives.
- A key file copied from another PC does not work on this PC; RoomCaddie must check the key again.
If something goes wrong
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| "nothing answered just now" | Connect this PC to the internet. RoomCaddie tries again automatically every half minute, or you can press Try now. |
| "That doesn't look like a RoomCaddie key" | A key is 36 characters with dashes. Copy it again from your email. |
| "The store doesn't know that key." | Compare your key with the one in your purchase email, character by character, and try again. |
| "which is its limit" | On one of your other PCs, open Settings > License and press Deactivate this PC…. If you no longer have that PC, email [email protected] and say which PC's place to free. |
| "That key is for something else, not RoomCaddie." | Look for your RoomCaddie key in your purchase email. |
| "RoomCaddie is locked" and "This key was refunded or disabled." | Your key no longer opens RoomCaddie. A new key opens your room again, exactly as you left it. If you did not ask for a refund, email [email protected]. |
| "This PC's place on the key was given back." | Press Check key again to use a place if one is free, or email [email protected]. |
