The idle screen

The idle screen: what the room shows when nobody has touched it for a while, with your message, your pictures and a league's standings.

Updated in 1.7.1

What it does

The idle screen covers the home screen when no one has used the room for a while. It shows the room name, your message, the clock and the date over the theme's background or your own pictures. Touch the screen, move the mouse or press a key to return to the home screen. The touch that wakes the room never starts a tile.

Before you start

  • The idle screen is on by default and starts after 10 minutes without activity. You can find its settings in the editor's Settings…, under Idle screen.

Step by step

Turn the idle screen on or off

  1. Open the editor and press Settings….
  2. Under Idle screen, press the button on the Idle screen row. It reads On or Off.

Change how long the room waits

  1. In Settings…, find Starts after.
  2. Press − or +. Each press changes the wait by one minute, from 1 to 60 minutes.

Show your own pictures

  1. In Settings…, press Pick folder… on the Photo background row.
  2. Choose a folder containing jpg, png or webp pictures.

The pictures fade from one to the next every 12 seconds. RoomCaddie reads the folder each time the idle screen starts without copying anything. To return to the theme's background, press Clear.

Add a message

  1. In Settings…, enter up to 120 characters in the Message box: house rules, a greeting or a tee-time note.
  2. Press Save or Enter. Your message appears under the room name.

To remove the message, empty the box and press Save.

Show a league's standings

  1. In Settings…, press the button on the League standings row so it reads On.
  2. Under Which league, tap the league you want to show. Only one league appears at a time.

The Leagues chapter explains the standings.

Good to know

  • The idle screen starts from the home screen. It also starts over the Guide and the standings board and closes them. It does not start in the editor, in Settings, in the setup wizard or while a tile is starting.
  • Every touch, mouse move, scroll or key press restarts the wait.
  • Above the room name, you see "Welcome to the", or "Welcome to" when the name starts with "The". Your room logo appears here as it does on the home screen.
  • After 3 seconds, "Tap anywhere to begin" appears.
  • The clock shows the time with AM or PM, and the date shows the weekday, month and day.
  • RoomCaddie shows up to 60 pictures from the folder, using the first 60 by name. It skips pictures larger than 12 MB, animated pictures and damaged files.
  • RoomCaddie can send "Idle screen on" and "Idle screen off" signals to your smart home when the idle screen starts and ends; the Smart home chapter explains signals.

If something goes wrong

What you seeWhat to do
The idle screen never appearsCheck that Idle screen reads On. Leave the home screen with nothing open over it and do not touch anything for the time shown under Starts after.
"The photo folder has no pictures (jpg, png or webp) — showing the theme's background instead."Put jpg, png or webp pictures in the folder, or pick another folder.
"couldn't be shown" with a reason, under Photo backgroundThe reason tells you what is wrong with a picture: its contents are not jpg, png or webp, it is damaged, larger than 12 MB, unreadable or animated. Replace or remove those pictures; the rest still appear.
"Only the first" pictures "by name are shown"The folder contains more than 60 pictures. Move some to another folder.
"Photos can't show"The message tells you the cause. Check that the folder is still there, or pick it again.
"That league no longer exists, so no standings show. Pick another league or turn this off."Under Which league, tap another league, or turn League standings off.
